"Border Song" is a vocal originally performed by British musician Elton John. Lyrics are credited to Bernie Taupin (although John himself wrote the words to the last verse).[2] The music was composed by John.

"Border Song" initially appeared on the 1970 album Elton John, and was released in the spring of 1970 every bit the LP's commencement single. Afterwards declining to nautical chart in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland, it was released in North America a few months subsequently. It met with more success there, especially in Canada, where information technology peaked at No. 34.[3] The appearance of "Edge Song" on the Canadian charts was John's showtime chart appearance in any country.

"Border Vocal" was besides John's get-go song to nautical chart in the United states, peaking at No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 69 in the Cash Box Tiptop 100[4] in October 1970. A embrace by soul icon Aretha Franklin (with "Holy Moses" following the title in parentheses to reverberate the repeated phrase in the vocal) fared improve reaching No. 37 in the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 23 in the Cash Box Top 100 in December 1970.[5] Information technology was included as the closing track of Aretha'southward 1972 Young, Gifted and Blackness album as well.

In the netherlands it peaked at No. 29 in the Dutch Top 40[half-dozen] in January 1971.

Music and lyrics [edit]

The song's melody is similar to that of a spiritual.[7] A choir sings during an instrumental interruption led past John's piano.

John has said that the song is about the alienation Taupin felt in and most London at the time ("Brand of people who ain't my kind"), and his want to visit dwelling every bit ofttimes equally he could. John himself wrote and added the last poesy, which departs from the theme of alienation and speaks against bigotry: "Holy Moses, allow us live in peace/allow us strive to detect a way to make all hatred stop/at that place's a man over at that place. What's his colour I don't care/he's my brother permit u.s.a. live in peace."

  • Aretha Franklin's album 1972 album Young, Gifted and Black concludes with her solo cover of this song. Cash Box said of this version that Franklin "brings the song to a eddy in an most-spiritual arrangement of the Elton John hit."[8]
  • Elton John and Aretha Franklin performed the song together on Franklin'southward 1993 Duets special.[9]
  • In 1996, Sophie B. Hawkins recorded the song for the soundtrack of the movie The Associate.
  • Willie Nelson covered the vocal on the 2018 John-Taupin tribute album Restoration.
  • Italian vocalist Mia Martini recorded in 1972 this song in Italian, with the championship as "Io straniera".

"Bad Side of the Moon" [edit]

"Edge Song"'s B-side, "Bad Side of the Moon", was subsequently covered by Apr Wine, whose version is on their album On Record and was released as their 2nd single from that album, and by Toe Fatty, whose version appears on their self-titled debut album and was also released equally a single. The song became a large striking in Canada, reaching No. 16 there. April Wine's version remains a staple of archetype rock radio in North America.
